While my family never combated schizophrenia, I saw echoes of my childhood in Hidden Valley Road’s dynamics. Addiction, depression, and unacceptable behavior were shoved in a back closet as we wore our public masks. We never discussed the difficult issues or struggles in need of confrontation — to ignore them was far easier. But, much like the Galvin parents, my parents loved us unconditionally and did their best.
