There is a famous quote. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice practice practice. The implication is that the person is asking for navigational directions, but the answer is more obvious. How do you get onto a world-famous stage? Practice.

So how do you wake up on November 4th?

Your side wins, or it’s the end of the world. No, really, if your side doesn’t win, it will be the end of the world. One way or another.

Strangely, how do you survive this election? You’ve been practicing for years.

I will do this.

  1. Wake up early to watch the sunrise.
  2. Make coffee.
  3. Turn on one light.
  4. Make notes in my notebook about ideas fresh in my mind.
  5. Scribble down messy incomplete thoughts.
  6. Promise the ideas that I will get back to them.
  7. Don’t worry that these ideas will feel like confusing clues later.
  8. Remind my brain that the clues will take my brain to the right place. I’m not that complicated. Clues are Pavlovian triggers to stories that I tell myself over and over even if they’re not written down yet.
  9. Once the day begins, amnesia starts to sink in. My ideas will be erased…
